, QUESTION 1.
1.1 African philosophy is concerned with attempting to reassert distinctively African ways
of thinking and of relating to the world. In the light of this, what issues need to be
addressed in education? List 4 issues. (8)

Here are 4 issues that need to be addressed in education from an African philosophy
perspective:
i. Decolonization of the Curriculum: Many African educational systems inherited
curriculum structures and content from colonial powers. This content often
overlooks or minimizes the contributions and perspectives of Africa throughout
history and across various disciplines. African philosophy emphasizes the importance
of understanding the world from an African perspective, so curricula need to be
revised to include African history, philosophy, literature, and scientific thought.
ii. Incorporation of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS): Traditional African societies
have rich knowledge systems encompassing agriculture, medicine, environmental
management, and social organization. These knowledge systems are often
disregarded in formal education. African philosophy emphasizes the value of
ancestral knowledge, so education systems should integrate IKS alongside Western
knowledge to create a more holistic learning experience.
iii. Focus on Communalism and Ubuntu: African philosophy often emphasizes the
importance of community, social responsibility, and interconnectedness. The concept
of Ubuntu ("I am because we are") highlights the interdependence of human beings.
Current education systems often prioritize individual achievement over collective
well-being. Reforming education to focus on collaboration, social responsibility, and
problem-solving within a community would better align with African philosophical
values.
iv. Pedagogical Approaches: Traditional Western pedagogical approaches might not
resonate with African learning styles. African philosophy emphasizes learning
through storytelling, proverbs, practical application, and respect for elders.
Educational practices should incorporate these methods alongside traditional
teaching styles to create a more engaging and culturally relevant learning
environment.
