ILE test prep (lucid) Exam Review Solution 100% Verified (Already Passed) A patient complains of a foul-smelling fluid coming from the right ear. Otoscopy reveals debris and fluid originating from the superior portion of the tympanic membrane. What's the Cause? A. Cholesteatoma B. Eczema C. Tympanosclerosis D. Otitis Media - ANS-The cause is Cholesteatoma, which is a collection of skin cells deep in the ear that can lead to infection and discharge. Eczema is itchy, dry, rough, flaky, irritated skin. Tympanosclerosis is a scarring process (hence sclerosis) that varies in location in the middle ear, can lead to conductive hearing loss, an is caused by chronic inflammation in the middle ear. Otitis Media is inflammation (hence itis) in the middle ear as the result of a cold, sore throat, or respiratory illness. Otitis media can lead to cholesteatoma, don't get the two confused. Describe the Tympanic Membrane - ANS-Also known as the eardrum, it separated the outter ear from the middle ear. How do you calculate the percentage of hearing loss that a patient has? - ANSHearing Loss may least often be attributed to? the aging process, ototoxic drugs, acoustic trauma, or noise exposure - ANS-Ototoxic drugs. These are drugs that are toxic to the ears and can cause hearing loss. High doses of aspirin, chemotherapy, and antibiotics are some examples. Signs of ototoxicity can include tinnitus or vertigo. Therefore ageing, acoustic trauma (damage to hearing mechanisms in inner ear), and noise exposure are far more common. The proper test method for a person with a collapsed ear canal is to? have earphones as tight as possible, insert tube into canal under earphones, put impression block in ear, put earphone loosely over each pinna - ANS-insert tube into canal under earphones, hyperactive movement of the mandibular joint may affect the: style of earmold selected, material of earmold selected, acoustic seal of earmold, or all of the above - ANS-all of the above: Style, material, AND acoustic seal Patient/Client records should be maintained: for the life of the patient/client, as required by applicable laws, 3 years, until original warranty expires - ANS-as required by applicable laws A 60 year old male comes back to your officea few days after you fit him in with a new hearing aid. He compains of background noise disturbing him and making speech hard for him to understand. His wife calls you one week later and reports that he continues to have the same problem. The BEST action to take at this time is to: change the fitting, schedule appt. for checkup, ask to speak with her husband, ask about his wearing frequency - ANS-schedule appt. for checkup Medications causing hearing impairment: 1. may depend on dosage and length of use 2. are known as ototoxic drugs 3. may affect each patient/client differently 4. are predominantly antibiotics A. 1,2,3 B. 1,3 C.2,4 D. 4 E. All are correct - ANS-A. 1, 2, and 3. It may depend on dosage, length of use, known as ototoxic, may affect each patient differently. Antibiotics CAN be ototoxic, but are not considered PREDOMINANTLY an ototoxic drug. The MOST effective type of masking noise to eliminate lateralization of pure tones is: narrow band, saw tooth noise, white noise, complex noise - ANS-Narrow band is the most effect type of masking noise to eliminate a pure tone because it is at a very SPECIFIC frequency. Narrow band is a very thin wave vs. broadband. Saw tooth Noise is using a saw tooth wave that is non-sinusoidal, square wave is constructed from only odd harmonics, and is harsh and clear. White Noise is static and is a full spectrum of waveform frequencies. Looks extremely full up and down. Complex noise has more than one sine wave frequency. Very irregular looking waves. A masking noise is an ambient background noise engineered to match the frequency of human speech for greater speech privacy. Adding sound to the space is counter-intuitive, but actually makes the space seem quieter. Lateralization is function of one side of the body in preference to the other. Pure tones characterize hearing thresholds, and has a sinusoidal (form of sine curve) wave form. Large or multiple canal blocks are commonly used in cases of: stenoic canals, fenestrated canals, atretic canals, all of these - ANS-Fenestrated canals. These are canals that have surgically had new openings formed especially in the bony labyrinth of the inner ear to treat certain types of deafness. This makes sense because MULTIPLE canal blocks would be used with these new openings. Stenoic canals refer to a narrowing of the ear canals. This does not make sense because you would need smaller blocks, not larger. Atretic canals refers to atresia which means an opening in the body is closed or absent. Which ONE of the following statements BEST explains the differences why CROS amplification is more effective than a monaural fitting? Your auditory balance will be changed. You will have better ability to determine location of sounds. You will have to learn to listen primarily with your left ear because sounds coming from your right side will no longer be picked up as well. With your new hearing aid you can only expect to hear only a small part of what is being said because you will be hearing with only one ear. - ANS- Continues...
