Two Types of Death Determiners - Medical Examiners & Coroner Medical Examiner - They are a type of death determiner who is appointed by jurisdiction and must be a MD, preferably pathologist. Coroner - They are a type of death determiner who the elected by jurisdiction and their education/training is optional. Death Investigator - They investigate death under the jurisdiction of the coroner/medical examiner and need CSI training plus basic med. knowledge. They collect the scene context needed to determine cause of death. Pathologist's Assistant - They do everything a Pathologist would expect sign their signature. Autopsy Technician - They wash & sew up the body after the autopsy. Forensic Anthropologist - They specialize in Archaeology and Physical Anthropology. Do some mass-grave exhumation work for the military. Have training in Anatomy, Biology, and Archaeology Forensic Archaeology - They can help locate grave sites, recover and interpret human remains, and remove the bodies from the grave. Forensic Dentists - They work on civil cases involving malpractice, the assessment of bite mark injuries, due age estimations and Identification of human remains in mass fatalities or singles. They have a college degree, went to dental school, have specialty training and are ABFO certified Forensic Entomologists - They have a BS in Ecology or Entomology. Can do undergrad research. DNA Analysts - They work in a private or law enforcement lab. and have a BS in biology, genetics, or forensics. Their detail oriented & have good communication skills. Toxicologists - They analyze and identify substances within body fluids or tissues. They have training in biology, chemistry, and medicine plus a BS, MS, PhD or MD. They can work in law enforcement labs, medical examiner labs, hospitals, or private labs. Physical Anthropology - The study of the biology, variation, and evolution of humans. Including human population differences, growth and development, and the patterns of human shape and size. Entomology - The study of Arthropods. Including Insects, Spiders, Mites, Centipedes & Millipedes, and Aquatic cousins. 3 Types of Forensic Entomology - Urban, Stored Product, & Medicolegal Medicolegal Entomology - A type of entomology they deals with Insects consuming a human or animal body. Presumptive Test - Test which indicates the presence of a compound of interest. They have high sensitivity and moderate selectivity. Material should always be examined further. Confirmatory Test - Test or tests which positivity identify the material. They have moderate sensitivity and high selectivity. Five Possible Outcomes of a test - False Positive, False Negative, True Positive, True Negative, Inconclusive. Presumptive Testing Method - 1. Sample the stain- use swab or filter paper. 2. Apply the reagents 3. Document results Presumptive Test for Blood (4) - Kastle-Meyer/Phenolphthalein Test Leucomalachite Green Hemastix Fluorescent/Luminous Test
