, ▪ Emerged in response to behaviourist & psychanalytic theories that are
based on determinism
▪ Determinism – behaviours are pre-determined by (unconscious –
psychoanalytic or environment – behaviourist)
▪ Humanists have an optimistic belief of human behaviour – saying that
people naturally strive towards self-actualisation (reaching ones full
potential)
▪ Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) and Carl Rogers (1902-1987) were the
founders of humanism
▪ Maslow studied factors that lead to personal fulfilment & growth
▪ He studied people who had highly productive & happy lives
