Evaluate a threat by use of an example in a chosen public service

There are many threats to each public service, however one threat present to each public service is
terrorism, though the form of threat it takes to each service may be different it is still a serious threat
to each one and can cause serve damage to a public service and is treated as one of the most serious
threats to a public service. I choose however to evaluate by use of an example the threat of terrorism
to the police force.

There are many threats that can be posed by terrorism, not least because terrorism is very diverse
itself taking many forms. This can be from quite literal terrorism were individuals cause chaos, which
can be creating riots or similar, to chemical, biological or radiological attacks which whilst rare and
unlikely remain a threat of great severity. Often the most common form of terrorism is the use of
explosives in crowded areas or at HVI targets because this will likely kill/injure people or damage a
HVI target.

Regrettable Britain has experienced a long history of terrorism and has had many attacks carried out
against her. In most of these cases the police were often the first who were on the scene and had to
respond before other services and specialists were present. Perhaps the best example to use to
personify this is the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005. The bombings were carried out by Muslim
extremists on public transport and killed 56 people and injuring over 700. Initially police weren`t
involved first but the national power grid authority as it was believed initially there had been a
power surge on the underground, however once this had been dismissed and an explosion
confirmed the police became involved. Then counter terror specialists also joined and between the
police and counter terror a response was managed as the bombings continued. This was not just the
case though in central London but the whole country as the terror alert was raised to its highest
level. Suspicious packages and devices throughout the country were destroyed as well. Once the
type of attack had been confirmed hazmat teams and similar were dismissed but had the attack been
chemical or similar they would have been needed. Given the scale of the attack all services in
involved had to co-operate with one another and indeed many of the public joined to help,
restaurants for instance cleared tables for paramedics and provided table cloths to carry injured
individuals to ambulances and similar.
