Preparation for AC1.1

Domestic abuse:

Description:

Domestic Abuse is a type of individual crime and normally is a pattern based in
controlling and abusive behaviour towards the victim and is rarely a one off incident.
Typically the abuse involves the perpetrator seeking power and control over the victim
and over time tends to get worse, it may continue or even escalate after the couple
have separated and may take place in public but also privately at home which makes it
even more difficult to detect and witness.

Link to the scenario:

Case Example:

A clear and horrible case of domestic abuse is Alex Skeel, a 23 year old man from
Bedford who luckily survived the toxic and abusive relationship he uses to have with his
now ex girlfriend Jordan Worth; Alex was victim of clear physical abuse but Jordan also
abused of him psychologically and emotionally, In april 2018 Jordan Worth was
sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, also she became the first female
perpetrator in the United KIngdom to be convicted of coercive and controlling behaviour.
Bedfordshire Police describe this case as one of the most extreme and violent cases of
domestic abuse they ever had to deal with. When Alex arrived at the hospital and the
doctors examined him, he was told that he was just ten days aways from death, this
was because of the brutal physical abuse and malnourishment.

Analysis:

Offences:

In domestic abuse the perpetrator can offend in many ways the victim, some examples
of these are murder and rape, financial abuse, emotional and psychological abuse,
physical abuse and sexual violence and abuse. However in 2015 another offence was
added when coercive and controlling behaviour was added.

, Offenders:

Offenders of domestic abuse can be literally anyone, but the stereotypical and
generalised offender profile is that the offender is a male and usually the partner or ex
partner of the victim; but family members can also be offenders of domestic abuse.
Normally offenders have experienced some type of abuse during their childhood or
early years or have been witness of abuse or violence against a family member.

Victims:

Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, but typically most victims are young
females, research has shown that female victims are more likely to suffer multiple
offences but male victims are less likely to report it. According to the 2017 Crime Survey
For England and Wales the following groups of women are at greatest risk: women
aged between the range of 16-24, separated or divorced, those with long parents ot
have any disability, women with low income are targets too. As said males victims are
less likely to report because they might be afraid of the strong prejudice and for being
seen as “weak” or “unmasculine” .

Level of Public Awareness:Several factors make this type of crime have a low public awareness,
some of these are that it takes place privately hidden from the public and police and victims are
too afraid to report the crime. Feminist campaigners have had success in bringing this crime to
the attention of the media, politicians and the general public, causing the criminal system to take
domestic abuse more seriously. 1 out 4 women and 1 out 6 men are victims of domestic abuse
and yet only a small minority of these offences are reported to the police, 1 in 12 of these
reported abuse results in a successful prosecution which leads to the victims not reporting it and
that creates a low public awareness.

C, D or Both:
Domestic abuse would be a criminal offence because it break the Law of the UK and because of
that would have a formal punishment like a prison sentence, it could also be considered as
deviant due the fact offences that take place under this crime are against norms of society,
therefore domestic abuse would be classified as criminal and deviant.
