PATERNALISTIC COLONIALISM THROUGHOUT THE 19TH CENTURY
Introduction
In the 19th century, European nations justified their colonial expansion through many
philosophies, including paternalistic colonialism. This idea, based on racial
categorizations, suggested that the colonial authority had a paternal responsibility to
rule over the colonized individuals who were viewed as unable to govern themselves
because of their supposed inferiority. This essay will explore the complexities of
paternalistic colonialism by examining its many manifestations in various empires and
analysing the distinct approaches and implementations of each. The contentious
character of this ideology will be analysed, considering several interpretations and
possible arguments against the concept.
