UCL Qs: Course & Med School
Why UCL? 1. Integrated MBBS Curriculum - ANS - There are several reasons I want to study at UCL: - Exposure to clinical practice from first year. - This early patient contact really attracted me: - Can refine communication skills from an early stage - Empathise with patients - Bring medicine to life - When I was researching the course, I was very excited to hear that the curriculum integrates mental health across the entire MBBS programme as part of the 'vertical' CPP (Clinical and Professional Practice) modules. - Mental health is an issue that hits close to home for me, so I love that UCL is training doctors to champion mental health. I'd like to be a part of that. Open day: - Senior members of faculty are very responsive to students and student feedback. Staff listen! Why UCL? 2. Cadaveric dissection offered in anatomy - ANS - A couple of years ago, I attended a Introduction to Medicine day in which I had the opportunity to dissect a pig's head and respiratory system. - The feeling of holding the brain of another living thing was extraordinary and unforgettable. - Dissection offered at UCL would allow me once again to directly experience that engagement and fascination with the human body - I think it would be a highlight of my time at medical school. Why UCL? 3. London & Diversity - ANS - It really appeals to me that UCL campuses are situated across Central London. - The city has always been my home - and I love it's unpredictability and buzz. - As a person of colour myself, I like that UCL College one of the most diverse universities, a place of study for people of many cultures and nationalities. - At UCL, being surrounded by people with such different life experiences and perspectives will enrich my own life experience - helping me to learn and grow. - UCL India Society - Bollywood Club Nights 'Dhamaal' - Provide innovative ideas to promote the diversity of Indian culture to the UCL community. - Overall, I think that UCL's medical school provides an amazing setting for me to study Medicine for the next 5 years, and I can really see myself thriving there. Why UCL? 4. Spanish SSC - ANS - I enjoyed learning the language, and appreciating Spanish culture at GCSE. - I found it incredible that even my basic foundations in Spanish would enable me to communicate and connect with Spanish-speaking locals when I visited Cuba. Long-term pen-pals. - Foreign language study to develop my communication skills, receptive skills (listening and reading skills) and memory. - Relate to a patient's sociocultural background. - Allows students to tailor what they learn to their individual needs and interests. - Engage in a more meaningful way in an area of practice that you have enjoyed, or allow you to further develop skills or understanding. - Develop essay-writing, team-working, researching. How has UCL contributed to modern medicine?: COVID: Breathing aid - ANS - UCL engineers and medics developed a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) breathing aid now used in more than 60 hospitals across the UK.
