EED2601 Assignment 3 2023 ACTIVITY 1 1.1 Environmental education (EE) processes need to take into consideration the history and context behind certain environmental issues and their implications for communities and their lived context. 1.1.1 State any three environmental issues faced by the South African citizens. (3) Climate Change: South Africa is experiencing the impacts of climate change, including rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. Water Scarcity: Many regions in South Africa face water scarcity due to a combination of factors, including limited water resources, population growth, inefficient water management practices, and climate variability. Biodiversity Loss: South Africa is home to a rich diversity of plants and animals, but habitat destruction, pollution, poaching, and invasive species threaten many species and ecosystems. 1.1.2 Discuss the implications of the above-mentioned environmental challenges. (6) Climate Change: Increased risk of droughts and water shortages, impacting agriculture, food security, and livelihoods. Disruption of ecosystems, leading to loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Health impacts due to heatwaves, increased vector-borne diseases, and decreased air quality. Water Scarcity: Limited access to safe and clean water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene. Agricultural productivity and food security are compromised, affecting livelihoods and economic growth. Increased conflicts and tensions over water resources, particularly in water-stressed regions. Biodiversity Loss: Negative impacts on ecosystem stability and resilience, leading to reduced ecosystem services such as pollination, nutrient cycling, and water purification. Loss of valuable genetic resources and potential future scientific and medical discoveries. Disruption of cultural and spiritual practices tied to biodiversity, affecting the wellbeing of local communities. 1.1.3 Name at least one softwood tree species. (1) One softwood tree species is Pine (Pinus). ACTIVITY 2 2.1 After completing an environmental learning activity, learner’s environmental competences are amongst other things that learners should accomplish. As a teacher, plan how you will make teaching and learning interesting in your class by selecting an environmental theme and then applying any of the five 21st-Century Sustainability Competencies. 13 Use the table below to present your answers. Environmental theme: 21st Century Sustainability Competencies Application of the 21st Century Sustainability Competencies 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. (20) Environmental theme: Waste Management 21st Century Sustainability Competencies Application: Systems Thinking: Teach students about the interconnectedness of waste management with various aspects of the environment, economy, and society. Help them understand the life cycle of products, waste generation processes, and the impact of waste on ecosystems and human health. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Engage students in analyzing real-world waste management challenges and developing innovative solutions. Encourage them to think critically about the environmental, social, and economic implications of different waste management approaches and evaluate their effectiveness. Collaboration and Communication: Foster teamwork and collaboration among students to develop waste reduction campaigns or recycling initiatives. Encourage effective communication skills to raise awareness, engage the community, and promote behavior change regarding waste management practices. Citizenship: Encourage students to become active citizens by participating in community clean-up events, volunteering at recycling centers, or advocating for improved waste management policies. Help them understand their role and responsibilities in creating a sustainable and clean environment. Digital Literacy: Utilize digital tools and platforms to enhance learning about waste management. Encourage students to explore online resources, conduct research, and leverage technology for data collection, analysis, and communication related to waste management practices. By incorporating these 21st Century Sustainability Competencies into the teaching and learning process, students will develop a holistic understanding of waste management issues and become empowered to contribute to sustainable solutions in their communities. ACTIVITY 3 3.1 Identify two pillars of sustainability and discuss how they can be aligned with the purpose of environmental education. (8) Two pillars of sustainability are social equity and ecological integrity. These pillars can be aligned with the purpose of environmental education in the following ways: Social Equity: Environmental education aims to promote social equity by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to knowledge and opportunities to participate in sustainable practices. By educating individuals about the importance of sustainability, environmental justice, and the impacts of human activities on marginalized communities, environmental education can empower individuals to take action towards a more equitable and just society. Ecological Integrity: Environmental education emphasizes the preservation and restoration of ecological integrity. It encourages individuals to understand the interdependence of living organisms and their environment and to recognize their role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. By teaching about biodiversity, conservation, and sustainable resource management, environmental education fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the environment, thereby promoting ecological integrity. By integrating social equity and ecological integrity into environmental education, educators can instill values, knowledge, and skills in individuals that enable them to make informed decisions and take sustainable actions for the benefit of both society and the environment. 3.2. It is imperative for a teacher to select appropriate teaching methods for environmental education. 3.2.1. Describe how you will use any of the five guiding criteria for selecting environmental education approaches in your lesson. (10) When selecting environmental education approaches for a lesson, the following guiding criteria can be used: Relevance: The teaching method should be relevant to the specific environmental issue or concept being addressed. It should connect with the students' interests, experiences, and local context to make the lesson meaningful and engaging.
