Family Resource Management Management: - Management is purposeful use of resources to achieve valued goals. Reactive Resource Management: - A crisis arises and we react to it. Something comes up and I react to it. Ex: Car breaks down. I need to get it fixed and I need money to fix it. Proactive Resource Management: - Thinking in a forward thinking way in managing resources. Planning ahead. Think more. Be more prepared. Ex: I know children gets sick a lot of the time so I have a back up child care place so I don't have to scramble to find someone to watch my kid. Family Resource Management Definition: - Management is purposeful use of resources to achieve valued goals Assumes that every family whether they have a lot of resources or very few resources can MANAGE THEIR RESOURCES MORE EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY. -More of a Proactive Resource Management definition -About making things that are often implicit into something explicit In order to manage our resources, we go through these steps: - 1.Identify problem, need, want or goal 2. Clarify values 3. Identify resources 4. Decision making plan/ implement 5. Accomplish and evaluate 5. Feedback Perspective Influenced by: - -History -Environment -Culture Environmental Resources: - Environment: The world around the family Environment determines what resources are available, accessible, valuable and useful. Examples of Historical Influences: - -Political or social movements -Macro economic trends -Cultural movements -Natural catastrophes Historical Influences: - Historical influences impact us in several ways: -Alter our pool of resources (sometimes for worse, sometimes better) -Alter our perception of goals (preferences, understanding of what's attainable) Cultural Influences: - Cultural influences account for much of the decision making process through influencing family values and priorities. A variety of cultures influences families: -Culture of individual families -Culture of specific group -Culture of dominant society Theory: - Provides a "lens" through which aspects of family life is studied. Informs: -Research -Clinical work -Education -Policy initiatives Human Ecology: - The study of human communities and their interdependence with various environments Family Ecology: - A subset of Human Ecology which studies the interdependence of families and their various environments. Family Systems Theory: - Views families as a system of interconnected members "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts" Ecosystem Framework: - Combining the ideas of Family Ecology and the ideas of Family Systems led to lead to the development of an "Ecosystemic framework" Ecosystem Idea: The family is a system embedded with other systems Economic Theory: - -The use of scarce resources is costly -May choose purposely to try to get most from resources -Incentives matter -Often focus on the differences in costs and benefits between alternatives -Information can be scarce and costly to acquire -Actions may have both immediate and long term or spin-off effects -Preferences vary Optimizing/Maxinizing: - Obtaining the best result Satisfying: - Choosing the first good alternative Social Exchange Theory: - Explains how we feel about a relationship with another person depending on our perceptions of: -The balance between what we put into the relationship and what we get out of it -The kind of relationship we think we deserve
