Semester 2-
Biochemistry
note
, Week 1: Amino Acids
Part 1
Introduction:
Proteins
A diverse group of molecules
Can exist in many different shapes and sizes
Can exhibit a range of chemical & physical properties
Proteins can be classified into 2 groups:
1. Fibrous proteins: Shapes of ropes or fibres
2. Globular proteins: Rounded shape-like.
They both have different functions.
Fibrous proteins
Are important structural proteins
Long, thread-like, tough, and insoluble in water
They include
- collagens, keratin, fibrin, elastin, muscle proteins (myosin’s, actin), fibroin.
- bone, skin, tendons, cartilage, hair, wool, fur, nails, claws, scales, feathers, muscle,
silk
- Fibrous proteins include stuff in our body such as collagens, keratin, etc. They are
important for everything we need for solid structure in our bodies, bone, skin, hair
etc. in the animal, they are used for claws, feathers, scales, etc.
