Biology A Unit 1 Questions and Answers Already Passed What characteristics are shared by all living things? All organisms on earth share all loving things How do the characteristics of living things contruibute to an organisms survival? The categories of living and non-living are constructed by humans, and they are not perfect. Describe the relationship between cells and organisms All organisms are made up of one or more cell What is the difference between unicellular organism and a multi cellular organisms? Do they both carry out all the necessary functions of life? A unicellular organism carries out all of the functions of life, just like humans and multicellular organisms have specialized functions that relax muscles, digestive juices How is biodiversity related to the biopshere Biosphere and biodiversity are normally found in ALL areas, which includes could, hot, warm places In general, how does biodiversity vary across the biosphere? Biodiversity generally increases from earth's poles to the equator, while every part of the biosphere is connected, however distantly, with each other part of the biosphere What is an organism? An organism is any individual living things Where do all living things on earth exist? Earth How are structure and function related? Give an example of how they are related in living things When you eat, you probably bite into food with your sharp front teeth. Then you probably chew it mostly with the grinding molars. All of your teeth help you eat, but different types of teeth have different functions Do you think that the heart muscle has the same structure as the arm muscle? Explain and support your response. The heart is made up of cardio muscle which is branched and has only one nucleus and is involuntary. Arm muscles are skeletal, which means they are voluntary ( You consciously control them ), they have multiple nuclei, and they are attached to the bone. What is homeostasis, and why is it important? Homeostasis is usually maintenance of constant internal conditions in all organisms. Homeostasis is important because cells function best within a limited range of conditions. Do you think homeostasis is necessary at the level of a single cell? Explain and support your response. No. Homeostasis is usually maintained through a process called negative feedback. In negative feedback, a change in a system causes a response that tends to return that system to its original state. How are structure and function related to adaptation? The structure and function of an organism is related to its diet for its way of living How does evolution lead to both the diversity and unity of life? Organisms are related to one another. When you see all organisms have similar cell structures and chemical processes. These shared characteristics result from a common evolutionary descent. Why is carbon called the building block of life? Carbon is often called the building block of life because carbon atoms are the basis I of most molecules that make up living things What about carbon atoms make them so unique and important? Carbon atoms are important because its atomic structure gives it bonding properties that are unique among elements. Each carbon atom has four unpaired electrons in its outer energy. Therefor, carbon atoms con form covalent bonds with up to four other atoms, including other carbon atoms. The prefix Mono- means "one," and the prefix Poly- means "many." How are these means related to the terms monomer and polymer? When monomers are linked, they form molecules called polymers What is the definition of a product? Products are the substances made by a chemical reaction. What is the definition of a reactant? Reactants are the substances changed during a chemical reaction. Carbon dioxide and water are the products. What causes chemical bonds to break during a reaction? Energy is added to break bonds, and energy is released when bonds form. What is bond energy? Bond energy is the amount of energy that will break a bond between two atoms Describe
