RELI 448N Week 3 FALLACIES CASE STUDY Religion all Complete Solutions Latest Verified Review 2023 Practice Questions and Answers for Exam Preparation, 100% Correct with Explanations, Highly Recommended, Download to Score A+ Week 3: Fallacies Case Study DIRECTIONS: Analyze each of the following arguments to identify whether or not it exhibits a fallacy. If it does, define the fallacy you have identified. 1. Either you are with us or you are against us. Since you are not supporting our campaign by donating to it, you must be against our cause. Yes, this exhibits a fallacy. It is giving you an either or choice when there are alternatives to why you may not be donating to the campaign for example not having enough money. This type of fallacy is known as false dilemma because of its false premise: either you are with us or you are against us. It persuades through distraction. 2. If we allow the government to ban assault weapons, we’ll have to allow them to ban handguns as well. And if we allow bans on handguns, we’ll have to allow bans on rifles. And what about knives? Aren’t they weapons too? We can’t just ban all the knives, so a ban on handguns would be idiotic. Yes, this exhibits a fallacy because it is addressing banning assault weapons but if that is done then saying we would have to ban all weapons including knives. This is an example of the slippery slope fallacy because it is drawing our attention away from the weak premise that if we ban assault weapons we will have to ban handguns as well. Our attention is distracted by the horrible thought of all weapons being taken away or banned from the government. The slippery slope is the fallacy that if we object to something on the grounds that if it is done, then something else will occur or is likely to happen as a result, and then something else, and something else, right down the “slippery slope”.
