RELI 448N Interview Essay Comparative Religion all Complete Solutions Latest Verified Review 2023 Practice Questions and Answers for Exam Preparation, 100% Correct with Explanations, Highly Recommended, Download to Score A+ Introduction I decided to do my interview with a doctor who I work with on occasion. For this paper I will refer to him as Dr. S. Before conducting this interview I was not very familiar with the religion that he practices. The religion that Dr. S. practices is Sikhism. “Sikhism is a yong, monotheistic religion that emphasizes equality and service.” (Khalsa, 2017). The Sikh religion stems from Hinduism but it is not the same as Hinduism. In Hinduism there is a variety of groups that focus on what an individual feels will lead them to “oneness”. The Vidas are the well-known ancient texts of Hinduism but the Sikh faith is not one to follow the Vidas. The teachings of Guru Nanak are what the Sikh faith follows. The texts that the Sikh belief follows religiously are known as the Granth (Molloy, 2013). Sikhism is a religion that was founded in the 15th Century in the Punjab region of India (Molloy, 2013). This exclusive faith, Sikhism, shares aspects of Islam and Hinduism. Aspects shared with Islam are monotheism and iconoclasm, and those shared with Hinduism are reincarnation, karma, and nirvana. Although Sikhism shares aspects with Hinduism and Islam, the belief is distinct from the two. The Sikh teachers, or Gurus, were reformers who rejected the caste system and a great deal of the system of Hinduism ritual and legalism. The ideas of religious tolerance and equality of women are promoted in this belief. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founding Guru. This founding Guru was well known for saying “There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim.”. Guru Nanak was born into a Hindu family who was of the merchant caste system. Throughout his younger years religion was always something that had been of interest to him. One day, after a three-day-long meditation and breathing ritual, Nanak returned to home with his new belief. He had betrayed his belief in the caste system of the Hindu belief, no longer believing in gods and goddesses, but now believing in one God. Throughout his travels and journeys in life he spoke to members of various religions. Though he talked to many people who practice different beliefs, he never asked or encouraged them to change their ways or follow him in his beliefs. He instead encouraged them to stay true to their beliefs and themselves. “Practice is oriented around three ‘golden rules’: to work hard, serve others, and speak the truth.” (Khalsa, 2017).
