Explain the importance of death in macbeth:

• Where death is shown
• Effects of death

Introduction- Shakespeare shows the importance of death in Macbeth through showing the
audience how going against the natural order of things by forcing himself to take the role of king by
treason, which ultimately lead to disaster. Death is so consistently shown that Macbeth becomes
immune to it and its effects, unlike when he kills Duncan and becomes extremely guilt ridden.
Shakespeare wants his audience to

1- Macbeth- change in attitude towards death from the beginning and the end. Duncans death-
guilt and even saw his ghost ‘for banquos issue I have files my mind’ . Later on- he kills the
whole of Macduff’s family without remorse. All for power
2- Macduff has very different reactions to death, despite being a solider like Macbeth, he is still
able to be more feeling and emotional. ‘my children too? ‘my wife killed too’
3- Lady Macbeth first having the plan to kill Duncan and then convincing macbeth by insulting
his masculinity was one of the catalysts to Macbeths downfall and the huge number of
deaths caused by him. She talks about how she would have killed her own child ‘dashes the
brains out!’ and how Duncan death didn’t affect her till later on when she was haunted by it
constantly- retribution for her involvement.
4- Play ends in violent death of macbeth

, The supernatural in macbeth

Introduction- in Shakespeare's cathartic tragedy Macbeth, Shakespeare presents a supernatural as a
manipulative subversion from norms to evil and disaster. Throughout the play common Macbeth
interacts with the witches and goes against the natural order which causes chaos and a number of
problems which are beyond the witches powers aligning Macbeth to the devil and causing his own
tragic ending at the end of the play.

1- Talk about extract-
2- Rest of play and link to extract- macbeths first line matches to the witches which created=s a
link between them. how witches are introduces ‘in thunder, lightning, or in rain’ rule of
three, pathetic fallacy, 3 is the number of witchcraft, ‘when the hurly burlys done’
foreshadowing chaos- witches are here to cause it, trochaic tetrameter- speech is ritualistic.
‘fair is foul and foul is fair’ paradoxical couplet, oxymoronic riddles- equivocation. ‘so foul
and fair a day I have not seen' language already mirroring which is, equivocation infecting
the play.
3- lady Macbeth supernatural speech ‘make thick my blood’ ‘unsex me here’ ‘o full o scorpions
is my mind’ ‘that I may pour my spirits in thine ear’
4- wider play- ‘something wicked this way comes’ it shows how even the evil creatures refer to
him as wicked showing it has gone beyond their power, also refers to him as something
dehumanising him. ‘turn hellhound’ ‘thou art too like the spirit of Banquo. Down!’

power in macbeth

intro- in Shakespeare's cathartic tragedy Macbeth, Shakespeare exposed a theme of ambition
through multiple characters but mostly through Macbeth. Throughout the play we as the audience
watch as a person’s ambition can grow until it is out of control and destroys a character.
Shakespeare constructs ambition as Macbeth’s harmatia leading to hubris and a tragic death.
Therefore, Shakespeare wants to show the audience that being blinded by ambition and committing
crimes will only end in your own tragic ending.

1- Extract
2- Macbeth and lady Macbeth both thirsty for power ‘unsex me here’-LM ‘have plucked my
nipples from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out’-LM ‘my black and deep desires
-M ‘We have scorched the snake not killed it’-M ‘art not without ambition but without the
illness should attend it’- LM. Now that the Macbeths have a taste for power they will stop at
nothing to carry on gaining it- as if whenever they gain power, it isn’t enough and they want
more.
3- How Macbeth’s ambition causes him to become violent and insane Hyperbolises the
destruction ambition brings, his bloodlust grows more and more in the play, registered for
power and infanticide for no reason. He ruthlessly kills Macduff’s family- even getting
someone else to do it for him. however, this could create the opposite effect and cause the
audience to be able to sympathise Macbeth later in the play as we don’t see the act of
violence occur.
4- Described as a ‘dead butcher’ at the end of the play by Malcolm- metaphor as it shows how
ruthless and destructive, he was towards himself and others. The adjective ‘dead’ shows a
lack of sympathy the characters have towards him and a deep hatred for what he had put
them through.
