Each state has a specific scope of practice for NP’s, which outlines the educational, licensure, and regulatory requirements that must be followed to be considered an NP. These requirements are mandatory to keep control of the profession and have a uniform regulation within each state. The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) adopted Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies, which guides NP’s to develop an effective, safe, independent, and interprofessional practice. Upon graduation, NP’s can apply these core competencies to have a successful professional practice. Expanding our role as NP’s, we prepare ourselves to have a leadership role with our colleagues and patients. To master a leadership role, we must develop individual leadership skills to ensure that we are accomplishing our goals as leaders. All these different areas will help us establish a professional plan into our advanced practice nursing career and give us a depth look at our professional path. APN Scope of Practice Each state has its interpretation of a Nurse Practitioner role, and they adapt their guidelines and regulations. I will be practicing in the State of Florida upon the completion of my Nurse Practitioner degree; for this reason, I have analyzed their scope of practice for NPs. 2According to the Nurse Practice Act of Florida State, before an individual submits for initial licensure for NP, they had to obtain a completion certification from an approved master or doctorate- degree program. They also are required to have an active registered nurse license from the state of Florida and proof of a National Certification for APRN. After submitting these official papers, the individual can obtain a Nurse Practitioner license for the State of Florida. Nurse Practitioners have restricted practice authority in Florida under the Nurse’s Act and rule 64B9-4.010 “Standards for Protocols- Department of Health." According to these Standards of Protocols, “ARPN shall only perform medical acts of diagnosis, treatment, and operation pursuant to a protocol between the ARNP and a Florida licensed medical doctor, osteopathic physician, or dentist." The ARNP is required to have a written agreement with a specific medical doctor, osteopathic physician, or dentist, which will outline particular supervision protocols. The written agreement will contain general information and a collaborative practice agreement, which will be signed by both involved parties. This original written agreement should be kept in the facility where the NP will be practicing, and each party will obtain a copy for their file. Any amendments to the original written agreement will be signed by both involved parties. Upon termination of the contract, each party is required to keep a copy of the written agreement for four years as a reference. Under an established supervised written agreement with a medical doctor, osteopathic physician, or dentist, NP has the authority to prescribe, dispense, administer or order any drug that a patient requires under the NP-specific area. The authority for an NP to prescribe, dispense, administer or order medication also includes controlled substances scheduled II-V. Hopefully, in the near future, Florida will adapt a full autonomy practice approach for NPs like the other current 29 states. Nurse Practitioner (NONPF) Core Competencies According to the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), Nurse 3Practitioner Core Competencies was adopted in 2008 to guide master’s and doctorate nurse practitioner programs in preparing NP’s to implement the full scope of practice as a licensed independent practitioner. These competencies are an excellent demeanor for NP’s to adopt upon the completion of their educational program. The NP core competencies consist of nine competencies, which include scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent competencies. Each of the competencies has specific functions that the NP is required to master throughout their master's or doctorate- degree program. As registered nurses, we tend to start developing particular core competencies through our professional experiences, which will help us master all the core competencies required for NP upon completion of the degree. Throughout my 16 years as a registered nurse, I have practiced in various healthcare settings, which have helped heighten my clinical and professional skills to a higher standard. In my current role as a Director of Nursing for a home health agency, it has allowed me to enhance my leadership role and technology and information literacy competency. In my current position, leadership is the focus of my DON role. The patients and co-workers turn to my role to help them lead, improve healthcare, make decisions upon their health issues, and implement changes. At the same time, I have incorporated technology and information literacy with my leadership competencies. Being in the 21st century, healthcare is driven by technology, and it has been my key point to get knowledgeable with different ways to help my organization evolve. One of the most significant changes I adopted in the organization was going paperless with new software which co-workers are required to master before servicing the patient's in their home. Plus, teaching patient’s accessibility of their records from their own home. This program also helped me analyze different programs to track patient's progress and reporting it to their medical doctors. These two competencies enabled me to improve professionally, which will be useful 4with my NP role.
