Master’s-level nursing graduat understanding of nursing and relevant sciences as well as the ability to integrate this knowle interventions include both direct and indirect care components. Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies #5 Technology and Information Literacy Competencies 1. Integrates appropriate technologies for knowledge management to improve health care. 2. Translates technical and scientific health information appropriate for various users’ needs. 2a). Assesses the patient’s and caregiver’s educational needs to provide effective, personaliz health care. 2b). Coaches the patient and caregiver for positive behavioral change. 3. Uses technology systems that capture data on variables for the evaluation of nursing care. The essentials of master’s education in nursing was released in 2011 and it outlines what is expected of master’s prepared nurses. There are nine essential outcomes an advanced practice nurse must demonstrate in order to improve healthcare outcomes. The essentials set forth will help provide a better understanding of nursing practice and leadership opportunities so that continual learning can be promoted (AACN, 2011). Program Outcome #3: Use contemporary communication modalities effectively in advanced nursing roles Master’s prepared nurses are expected to provide patients with exceptional care. As clinical nurse leaders, master’s prepared nurses recognize this to include technology and health information. The integration of technology into healthcare has improved communication in many ways and will continue to do so as new advances present themselves. The electronic medical record is one example of how healthcare professionals can effectively communicate with one another and stay abreast of the patient’s situation. MSN Essential IX: Master’s-Level Nursing Practice: Master’s Level Nursing Practice Nursing practice at this level includes direct and indirect patient care. Master’s level nurses are expected to have advanced knowledge and understanding of nursing and the sciences involved and must be able to organize both into their practice (AACN, 2011). Advanced practice nurses will be able to influence the outcomes of individual patients, systems, and populations (AACN, 2011). Master’s prepared nurses have solid backgrounds on to which they continue to learn and build. This course allowed me to build upon my knowledge with the use of research and interactive discussion posts. Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies: #5 Technology and Information Literacy Competencies The use of technology and information is important in almost all areas of practice but especially for the advanced practice nurse. Nurses, along with all other healthcare professionals, are required to keep up on, understand, and implement new technologies into their practice. The use of technology is especially important when it comes to prescribing medications. Technology is constantly updating, which means using it is the most effective and up to date tool providers have for safely prescribing medications. For this course, I utilized UpToDate, Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR), and Epocrates to thoroughly research medications along with their mechanisms of action, dosing guidelines, contraindications, adverse reactions, drug interactions, black box warnings, pharmacology, and safety/monitoring. The use of these tools helped elevate my knowledge so that I could care for patients appropriately, effectively, and most importantly, safely.
