This research will employ qualitative research. According to Gupta and Gupta (2022) qualitative
research is typically employed when the researcher is interested in getting in-depth insight about
the phenomenon. In this research, given that the problems affecting small businesses are real.
These businesses are employing a number of strategies that need to be explored as there is strong
evidence from the continued survival, growth and competitiveness of these businesses that they
must be employing serious and effective strategies towards their own success and sustainability.
There seems to be a lot be understood about this small business phenomenon in South Africa. The
researcher is thus interested in uncovering intimately, the problem of these factors and other factors
that are contributing towards the success of this business in terms of survival, growth and
competitiveness. The research thus needs the researcher to do an in-depth investigation that can
uncover more deeper insight about the phenomenon (Mishra & Alok, 2022).
The researcher will employ exploratory qualitative research design where he will strip off his
preconceived assumptions and dig deeper into the operations of family business within Soweto.
This will allow the researcher to go deeper beyond enumerating the factors and strategies rather
understand their effectiveness, implications and recommendations going forward. The research
will, thus, go further to analyse the effectiveness of the strategies currently employed by family
businesses before recommending from a research perspective, the alternative strategies that can be
worth taking.
