This laboratory report delves into the investigation of various cold insulating materials to determine their effectiveness. The focus is on comparing the performance of different insulators in terms of their ability to prevent heat transfer in cold conditions. The report likely involves conducting experiments where you expose these insulating materials to cold temperatures and measure their thermal resistance. Through data analysis and comparisons, you aim to identify which insulating materials are the most efficient in preventing heat loss, making them suitable for applications such as cold storage, transportation, or other scenarios where maintaining low temperatures is crucial. The report may also touch on the practical implications of your findings and the potential real-world applications of the most effective insulating materials.

Introduction

Every substance that is composed of atoms and molecules has the capacity to transport heat.
They have this term called, “thermal energy”, which is produced by the motion of atoms and
molecules. Additionally, the amount of heat energy increases with molecular mobility. Energy can
be absorbed or released in the form of heat through three different ways such as conduction,
convection, and/or radiation (Wooldridge, 2020). When there is a temperature difference between
two bodies, heat transfer takes place, and it occurs in the process of moving heat from an object
with a high temperature to one with a low temperature (BYJU’S, n.d.). Hence, solids like ice
liquefy or turn to liquid because heat transfer happens from the surroundings (e.g. air) to the ice’s
molecules.

, Utilizing cold insulating materials will inhibit the phase change from ice to water. It prevents
condensation, moisture intrusion, and long-term degradation in any cold system
(TheProjectDefinition, 2015). Examples of cold insulating materials are Styrofoam or polystyrene,
hays, fiberfill stuffing, foams, etc. In this study, the researchers will combine different materials
to create or compose new and best insulators that will effectively keep warm gasses, solids, and
liquids from touching the ice.

Results and Discussion
The researchers created a table that provides explanations about their observations on
comparing different cold insulating materials. Also, Table 1. consists of the time elapsed as well
as the controlled variable along with the combined materials composed to be the insulators of the
ice. As the given table presents, the researchers used hay, wood shavings, and felt for the first
container. While on the second container, they used fiberfill stuffing and whole Styrofoam then
bubble wrap and crushed Styrofoam in the third container.
