The story of a destitute family who lived in constant fear of eviction provides insight into the causes and persistence of poverty. Many people who couldn't afford to live in homes spent their nights sleeping on benches or outside in the open air. Latin America's poverty was brought about by Europeans. They were forced from their homes and had their land taken away from them. Poverty can manifest itself in a number of ways, including a lack of adequate housing, food insecurity due to a lack of resources, and difficulty accessing healthcare. Poverty was at the very heart of how the system functioned.
