Topic 16: Self-management in a business context
Unit 1: Time management, personal goals, success and a balanced lifestyle
1.1 Time Management
Time management means to use time wisely to cope with the many tasks which we are expected to complete within
a limited time frame.
An effective way to organize your time is by planning your work on a weekly basis:
1. Make a list of the work you have to do with the deadlines and the time each task will take
2. Allocate your time accordingly
3. At the end of each week, make sure that you take some time to review the previous week’s work and to plan
next week’s work
Some of the main reasons for implementing time management are:
To achieve the goals you have set in good time
To keep your attention focused on those activities which are most important to you
To plan your daily, weekly or even monthly activities
1.2 Personal goals
Personal goal setting is a process of thinking about the future. It motivates you to turn your dreams into a reality.
Once you start to achieve your goals, it will improve your self-confidence and goal setting will become part of your
everyday life.
Personal goal setting can help you in many areas of your life:
1. Attitude – your attitude will determine how many personal goals you will achieve
2. Career – where would you like to see yourself in the next 5 years?
3. Education – learning is a continuous process and to enrich your life you should never stop learning
4. Family – how much time you spend with your family?
5. Finances – it is important to have a financial goal in order to enjoy the material side of things
6. Health – good health lets you enjoy all that you have achieved
7. Personal life – this means having time for yourself or time for the things that you enjoy
1.3 Success
Success is to achieve a desired plan or attempted goal.
1.4 A balanced lifestyle
If you have a balanced lifestyle, you will find happiness in almost everything you do. A balanced lifestyle is where you
have balance between five key elements in your life: physical (exercise, healthy balanced diet), mental (planning
your day and remaining positive), spiritual (reading the bible), social (doing good deeds and paying attention) and
material (getting a good education). If you don’t maintain a balanced lifestyle, it can be detrimental to your health
because you stand a greater chance of suffering from a heart attack or nervous breakdown.

2.1 How to project a professional image
In business you need to dress, speak and behave in a way that is professional. You need to show respect for clients
and for other in the organisation, and you need to work in such a way that you help your colleagues to do their tasks
as well as they can. So you should behave appropriately at meetings, finish tasks properly and within the set time,
work neatly and thoroughly, and keep records of important data. Your writing should be clear and legible.
