, Criterion A: Fieldwork question and geographic context

Fieldwork question:
How successful was the regeneration of the Olympic Park Stratford in comparison to the
regeneration of the Isle of Dogs?

Link to Syllabus:
This fieldwork is linked to Option G: Urban Environments, Sub-Topic 2: Changing Urban
Systems, in particular regeneration and deindustrialisation.

Geographical Context:
Stratford was originally an industrial hub in the late 18th/early 19th century and following
1970s deindustrialisation was full of abandoned chemical plants, (Stratford City Business
District LTD, 2019). Unemployment levels were high, and housing was inexpensive and
undesirable, (Clugston, 2016).
From 2007, Stratford underwent major urban regeneration of its polluted brownfield
sites, before hosting the 2012 Olympic Games, (Smith, 2012). This has now been termed the
‘Olympic Regeneration’, (Smith, 2012).

The Isle of Dogs was also an industrial hub in the late 18th/early 19th century and following
1960s containerisation, the East India Docks in London suffered, (London's Royal Docks,
2020). Containerisation refers to a method of transporting freight by placing it in large
containers, replacing standard sized boxes, (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2022).
Transportation of these containers became difficult because the Thames waterway was too
shallow and had many meanders.
The docks became unusable and many local people lost their jobs so the area fell into
poverty. Therefore, in 1981, the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) was
set up by the UK government to regenerate the area, (Agbaimoni, 2021). Since its
regeneration, it has become a commercial hub, with Canary Wharf now being part of
Central London’s Central Business District (CBD), (Greater London Authority, 2008).

Fieldwork Locations:
The following figures show the location of the two sites on a national and regional scale, and
the subsites on a local scale.

The investigation took place in East London (Figure 1.1), in England.
