Basal Ganglia in Motor
Control
BASAL GANGLIA CONNECTIONS
information that goes to the basal ganglia comes from the
cerebral cortex. this comes down as the corticostriate tract
the basal ganglia also gets some of its input from the
intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus in the internal y
shaped medulla
Circuit of connections
cortex to basal ganglia to thalamus and back to the
cerebral cortex
helps to program automatic movement sequences
Output from basal ganglia to the reticular formation
this reduces muscle tone
damage produces rigidity of Parkinson's disease. this is
because of lack of dopamine in the nigrostriatal pathway
striatum (neostriatum)
caudate nucleus
putamen
lentiform nucleus
putamen
globus pallidus (paleostriatum/pallidum) - internal and
external segment
