Introduction to Ray Optics

Newton's Corpuscular Theory and Reflection of Light
Newton's corpuscular theory explains the rectilinear propagation of light and its reflection off
surfaces. When a light ray is incident on a surface and bounces back, it is called reflection.
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, as explained by the laws of
reflection. Reflection can be observed in plane and spherical mirrors.
Refraction of Light
Refraction occurs when a light ray passes through a medium with a different refractive index,
causing it to bend. The degree of bending depends on the angle of incidence and the
refractive indices of the two media involved. Snell's law describes the relationship between
the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction.
