LANGUAGE & POETRY
- Anglo Saxon and Norman Languages form the English language which becomes the
preferred language in 1400, being used in the parliament and the Royal Court
- The Canterbury tales are written by Geoffrey Chaucer. These were poems on
pilgrimage subsequently printed by William Caxton using the first printing press
- John Barbour writes The Bruce


THE TUDORS & STUARTS
- The War of the roses in 1455 is fought between the House of Lancaster and
House of York to control the English throne
- Henry Tudor, also known as Henry VIII (House of Lancaster) killed King Richard
III (House of York) at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and won the war
- The royal dynasty was made up of both houses uniting under Henry Tudor.
The symbol of the House of Tudor is a white rose inside a red rose.

HENRY VIII
- He breaks away from the Church of Rome and establishes the Church of England
where the king holds the power instead of the pope
- He marries six times
- First wife is Catherine of Aragon, a spanish princess, who gives him a daughter but is
unable to give him a son
- Second wife is Anna Boleyn whoo he executes as he believed she had lovers
- Third wife is Jane seymour who gave him a son
- Act of government of Wales is established which unitess Wales with England during his
reign
- His son Edward VI reigned after him shortly and introduced the Book of Common
Prayer
- Edward VI is succeeded by Mary who was called Bloody Mary because she persecuted
protestants
- After came Elizabeth I who avoided religious conflicts and managed parliament
- Elizabeth defeated spanish armada (A large fleet of Spanish ships) in 1588

IRELAND
- Henry VIII declares himself king of Ireland
- Rebellions came from irish people so English government encourages English and
Scottish protestants to settle in Ulster in Northern ireland and take plantations from
catholic landowners

THE REFORMATION
- It was a movement against authority of Pope and catholics
- During this time, Protestants formed their own churches
