How effective are freshman seminars in retaining students after their first semester and is there a benefit to the students by instructing them to be prepared on what to expect in college, selecting a major, campus services, better study habits, and by building confidence in the student. METHOD: THE STUDY. Who participated in the study? What did the researchers ask the participants to do? 118 students, 60 female and 58 male ranging from 18 to 61 with grade point averages ranging from 2.31 to 4.00 participated. The students were split the into three groups based on their GPA scores. The students took a pre-test and a post-test that tested five categories covered in the seminar:
