Emerging Technology Brief: Telenursing and Remote Access Telehealth
Technology and health care have gone hand and hand for a long time. Consistent advances in information technology in health care have saved millions of lives and improved many others. As the years pass and technology continues to grow, there is no telling what medical advancements will come next. With the rise in technology and research, healthcare systems continue to find the best ways to solve healthcare problems and improve the quality of care provided to patients at a reduced cost. Advanced technology has been valuable to healthcare
providers in their line of duty and improves the well-being of the diverse population. The advanced technology used in healthcare includes nanotechnology, genetics and genomics, robotics, wearable computing, and telehealth (DeNisco,2021). The purpose of this paper is to discuss telenursing and remote access telehealth as emerging technology and their role in health care, ethical or legal issues accompanying the incorporation of the technology, and the nurse's informatics role regarding the technology.
Overview of Telenursing and Remote Access Telehealth
Telehealth has been gaining momentum since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Telehealth or telemedicine uses telecommunication tools and communication networks to share and communicate information between participants at different locations. This technology provides opportunities to enhance care when face-to-face interaction is impossible (such as in-home care, school-based care, and rural areas) and can be used in various settings and
situations if the equipment is available (DeNisco,2021). Telenursing is a part of telehealth where nurses use telecommunications and information technology to provide nursing services in health care and improve care whenever a physical distance exists between patient and nurse or among any number of nurses (McGonigle & Mastrian,2018).
