Syllabus
Course Description
This course introduces the concepts and techniques of interviewing, history taking,
review of systems, and physical assessment. The course provides the student with
fundamental knowledge of pathophysiological stressors commonly encountered by
adults. Laboratory experiences enable the beginning student to apply assessment skills,
communication skills, cultural awareness, nursing process, critical thinking skills,
teaching skills, and psychomotor skills consistent with the care provider role in acute
care and community based settings.

Prerequisite: AHP217
Total Contact Hours: 50 (30 for Lecture; 20 for Laboratory, 0 for Simulation, 0 for
Clinical); Total of 20 hours for Lab, Simulation, and Clinical. Out-of-Class Work:
106 hours; Quarter Credit Hours: 4.0

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Analyze relevant assessment data to provide holistic client-centered care.
2. Utilize the nursing process, critical thinking, evidence-based information, and
knowledge from the arts and sciences to support sound clinical decisions.
3. Communicate effectively through verbal, nonverbal, written, and technological
means with individuals, families, and health care team members.
4. Apply nursing process for clients in a safe, compassionate, culturally competent
manner that promotes human dignity.
5. Manage the efficient, effective use of human, physical, financial, and technological
resources in providing continuity of care within and across healthcare settings.
6. Collaborate with individuals, families, and healthcare team members in providing
comprehensive, individualized patient care.
7. Demonstrate accountability in adhering to standards of professional practice within
legal and ethical frameworks.
8. Participate in activities that promote professional development and personal growth.

Course Objectives
In this course, students will:
1. Perform a comprehensive assessment to determine an individuals’ physical,
cognitive, psychosocial, spiritual, and functional health status. (SLO 1,2,3)
2. Demonstrate correct techniques of a head-to-toe physical assessment. (SLO 1,2)
3. Formulate a prioritized problem list that accurately reflects an adult client’s health
care needs. (SLO 4,6)

, 4. Use principles of communication, cultural awareness, nursing process, critical
thinking, and teaching at the beginning level of skill in performing virtual clinical
nursing activities. (SLO 3,5,6)
5. Describe basic pathophysiological mechanisms and their impact on an individual’s
health. (SLO 1,2)
6. Perform selected virtual nursing skills with consideration of scientific principles and
holistic needs of the individual. (SLO 1,2,4)
7. Examine recent research findings related to the nursing care of individuals
experiencing selected physiological stressors. (SLO 5,8)
