Application of Orem’s Theory on COPD Patients
The Self Care Deficit theory focuses mainly on improving the nursing qualities in healthcare facilities. The theory was developed by Dorothea E. Orem, hence the etymology of the theory. The theory combines different concepts that harmoniously integrate a solution to a specific phenomenon. Nurses can implement it to cater to various patients’ needs under their care. Multiple assumptions have been made regarding this theory. One of the assumptions is that human beings tend to exhibit self-reliance and take responsibility for themselves and immediate family members. The second assumption is that primary nursing care and prevention of health deterioration can only be met by successfully meeting developmental and universal requisites to self-care. The third assumption is embedded in the notion that self-care is dependent on learning based on a socio-cultural background. Lastly, healthcare self-care behaviors can only be employed when an individual has adequate knowledge of the problem.
