Sampling with Sweets
Target population – tip 20 the sweets out of the bag and record how many of
each colour there is in a table.
Sweet Number Percentage

1. Total number of sweets – count how many there are altogether.
2. Percentages – divide how many red ones by the total number of sweets and then
multiply by 100 (round to nearest whole number). Complete for each colour and
record next to your table.
Sampling methods
1. Random Sampling – Pick out 10 sweets at random, one at a time, and record how many
of each you get in the table.

available to do your research. Record the results in the table.

3. Volunteer Sampling
Now you have to imagine you put an ad in a newspaper for people to take part in your
study, the red and the orange sweets were not interested, half of the green and all of the
yellow and purple wanted to take part.
You will still conduct the study even if you don’t get all 10 participants.
Put the beads in the centre. Remove only the beads of the willing participating colours and
count them.
