Chronic progressive disease producing obstruction to the L ventricular
stroke volume leadingto chest pain breathlessness syncope pre
and fatigue
Anatomy
Located between L V t 4 aorta Consists of 3
Cusps R L Post
Causes
Calcific aortic valvular disease Most common
Cause and mainly occurs in the elderly This is an inflammatory
process involving macrophages and T lymphocytes with
initially thickening of sub endothelium w adjacent fibrosis
The lesions contain lipoproteins which calcify T leaflet
stiffness t d systolic opening Can occur in Tri or Bicuspid
valve
Risk factors Old
age male elevated LDL H TN smoking
Diabetes
Bicuspid aortic valve Most common
congenital heart
disease 1 2 Associated w aortic coarctation dissection
etc
I 30 40
Rheumatic fever Can produce progressive fusion thickening
