The population that I will be working with as a future counselor are individuals with behavioral health problems such as depression, substance abuse and PTSD. I currently been working in this population since 2011. This is a difficult and challenging population to work with but that is part of the reason I enjoy working with this population. It is also very rewarding when you are able to see the positive changes and success for individuals within this population. The first assessment I would use is the ASIST: A Structured Addictions Assessment Interview for Selecting Treatment regarding. The ASIST assessment is a structured interview designed to aid therapists and administrators in determining the severity of need and the best treatment intervention for individuals who exhibit alcohol or drug abuse symptoms (Addiction Research Foundation, 1984). I strongly believe that the clients at my job can benefit from this assessment due to their excessive ER visit to the hospital due to substance abuse. The Second assessment I would use is the Stress Assessment Questionnaire. This assessment would be use for the clients who are dealing with self-esteem, depression, anxiety and other factors of stress. This assessment can be beneficial for individuals who have an understanding of their stress factors. According to Cameron (2002), the purpose of the stress assessment is to provide an integrated multi-factor stress assessment measure for counseling and self-development. The last assessment i would use is the PTSD and Suicide Screener. This particular assessment screen individuals for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide risk. Clients that have experienced trauma should be screened for suicidality by asking, open ended questions that relates to suicidal ideation. According to Briere (2013), Trauma-related symptoms, depressive or dissociative symptoms, sleep disturbances, and intrusive experiences are the most important domains to screen among individuals with trauma.
