B: PRODUCE A PLAN FOR AN
INVESTIGATIVE PROJECT BASED
ON THE PROPOSAL
Ajmal Shekeb Noormal
, Scenario:
I work in a research and development lab. My supervisor has decided it is time for me
to manage my own project. I have chosen an investigative project based on advice from
my supervisor and my own interest within the field of biology. I will produce and present
a plan for my project proposal to my supervisor along with notes in a logbook.
My plan
I will be investigating the effect of ethanol and caffeine on water fleas to analyse the
heart rate change. The experiment contains using daphnia’s and testing the effect of
ethanol and caffeine on their heartbeat. My independent variable will be varying
concentrations of the chemicals, and my dependent variable will be the change in heart
rate. My hypothesis is that the effect of the same concentration of ethanol and caffeine
on the heart rates of different daphnia of the same type will be similar. The null
hypothesis is that the effect of the same concentration of chemicals on each daphnia
will be completely different.
I am planning to carry this experiment in my school lab as it seems to be a suitable place
for my tests as all the equipment will be easily accessible. I will be carrying the
experiment at the timetabled sessions I have for the experiment and if I needed more
time, I will do the rest on my free periods during school time and I will be doing it all
over the week as I would require more time to repeat my test in order to get more
reliable results.
The materials I will need to carry this experiment which I will be able to access all with
the help of technician in our school lab include:
Electric Microscope and Cavity Slides,
distilled water
Daphnias of the same size from the same environment,
Ethanol 5%,
Caffeine 0.5%,
Pipette,
Syringe,
Petri dishes,
Stopwatch,
Absorbing cloth or tissue,
Marker,
Logbook,
Pen/Pencil,
Thermometers 2x
Phone for video recording
