Internal Environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility
In this part of the report, I am going to discuss the internal competitive environment in Sainsburys. I am also
going to assess the effects of the internal environment in the business

Corporate Culture refers to the beliefs and behaviours that determine how a company's employees and
management interact and handle outside business transactions. This is important for a business such as
Sainsbury as it guides how the employees of the company act, feel, and think. This is different from one
organisation to another, as different organizations will have unique personality, core values, ethics,
behaviours, and beliefs that are only exclusive to them.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a management concept whereby companies apply social and
environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders. This is
important for a business such as Sainsbury as it can build and enhance their brand. Corporate social
responsibility influences the employees to support the organisation to be successful, as it boosts
employee’s morale, which can lead to an increase in productivity within the workforce. The CSR initiative
will be influence by the culture on the organization.

Sainsbury mission statement is “To be the consumer’s first choice for food, delivering products of
outstanding quality and great service at a competitive cost through working ‘faster, simpler and
together.”

Businesses like Sainsbury’s take CSR seriously and it is an entrenched in the way they run the business.
We must note that aspects of CSR are also required by law and it can touch many aspects of the
organisation such as operations, human resources such as employees, supply chain, environmental issues
and many more.

The first Corporate Social Responsibility that can applies to Sainsburys is the Environment, which refers to
the surroundings or conditions in which an inhabits or business lives or operate in. Sainsbury’s are
committed to reducing the environmental impact of their activities with the aim of preventing waste,
pollution, applying the environmental laws and regulations and meeting the needs of their stakeholders
such as consumers and shareholders etc. An advantage of environment on Sainsbury is that is helps them
reduce their costs, as they can avoid using unnecessary materials or reduce paper wastage by asking staff
to print double-sided. They even charge 20p for plastic bags to limit plastic wastage, this was first
introduced in October 5 2015, and since then they have been gaining additional profit for the charge of
plastic bags and also adhering to the government initiative in this area to reduce the damage to the
environment from the use of plastic. This means when people use less plastic it is saving the
environment.C.M3. However, due to the wide variety of laws protecting the environment, Sainsbury would
need to take legal precautions when disposing their biodegradable and non-biodegradable items to avoid
getting fined, this can be expensive and time consuming for them to dispose their waste properly as these
laws was put in place to help limit pollution and reduce environmental damage.C.M3 This can impact
Sainsbury as they must be environmentally friendly due to them maintaining, and even possibly increasing
their reputation and market share of being the UK 3rd biggest supermarket. C.M3
