UNIT 3 – CLIMATE AROUND THE WORLD
, UNIT 1 – FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE
TEMPERATURE AND RAINFALL
Some places are hotter and others are wetter than others, this is
due to five different factors which influence temperature and
rainfall:
1. Distance from the equator (Latitude)
❑ Measured in degrees of latitude, starting from the equator at 0°
2. Distance from the sea
3. Height above sea level
❑ Measured in metres above sea level, which is 0m
4. Ocean currents
5. Mountains (Relief)
, Distance from the equator (Latitude)
Effect on Temperature:
❖ Different areas on the surface of the earth receive different amounts of
sunlight
❑ This is due to the angle at which the suns rays strike the surface of the earth
❖ Temperatures are highest at the equator
❖ The temperature decreases as you move towards the poles
❖ The sun’s rays heats the earth and the earth heats the air above it
