Assignment 2
1. How can the principles of Ubuntu be applied in the criminal justice system to ensure
justice for victims? (200 words, 5 marks)

During the period of transition from apartheid to democratic South Africa, Ubuntu played a
significant role in the nation's development. Ubuntu has benefited the country's development of
a democratic society by avoiding the mentality of "an eye for an eye" and connecting all people
together, regardless of ethnicity. It is undeniable that Ubuntu has played a significant part in
the development of a non-racial society, given that it is mentioned in the South African
Constitution of the Bill of Rights, in which the Constitution declares that “we have equal rights
and opportunities.” Similarly, these words are expressed by John S. Mbiti, who emphasized the
significance of the community in reshaping the people.
