Introduction
Human growth and development seeks to describe the discontinuous series whereby an
individual goes through various stages of life, i.e., from childhood to adulthood (Baltes et al.,
20). An important component in this field is lifespan development which focuses on providing
specialists with a clear understanding of the growth and change that takes place during various
life stages. Further, this field examines the basic influences that contribute to human growth and
development, such as behavioral patterns of change, growth, and instability during an
individual's lifespan (Baltes et al., 31). During this course, I have learned important theories and
concepts, including Erickson's psychosocial development theory and Kohlberg's theory of moral
development. These theories will help me gain insight into students' moral reasoning and
evaluate each student’s level of moral development as a counselor. This paper focuses on how
these theories in my future practice as a school counselor.
Kohlberg's theory is based on a series of moral dilemmas and moral judgment. This
theory focuses on six levels: reconvention, conventional, post-conventional, social contract, and
law and order (Zhang & Zhao 3). Notably, I have learned important aspects from the theory,
which I will utilize in my professional career as a counselor. A key aspect learned about
Kohlberg's theory is that it evaluates students based on moral development and moral stages.
Essentially, some students develop high stages of moral development quickly than their peers. In
this case, I will assess the moral reasoning of each student by evaluating how they conform to the
laws and how consequences such as punishments and rewards influence their decisions (Zhang
& Zhao 3). Additionally, as learned from the theory, I will focus on the motive behind their
behaviors and how the consequences of their actions affect them. This approach will help me
understand each teenager's level of sensitiveness to authority and how societal expectations
affect their behaviors (Zhang & Zhao 4). As a counselor, the theory will help me gain insight
into teenager's interpersonal relationships. I will use this theory to determine whether students
consider the impacts of their actions on other people. Based on these facts, I will use the
Kohlberg theory to evaluate students' behaviors and moral reasoning.
Erikson's psychosocial development focuses on how social interactions and relationships
impact the development and growth of human beings (Knight 1). Erickson's indicates that human
development is influenced by culture and society. Essentially, I have learned imperative facts
from the theory, which I will apply in my professional career as a counselor. In my future career
as a counselor, I will apply Erickson's Psychosocial Developments theory to evaluate how the
