ANSWERS TO QUESTION PAPERS

Jan 2013
Question 2 [25]

WRITE AN ESSAY TO DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF CURRICULUM
DEVELOPMENT (JAN 2013)

Curriculum Development consists of 4 phases which are
interlinked and interrelated as at any given point one may
move back or forward to the different phases. The 4 phases
are Design, Dissemination, Implementation and Evaluation. It
is imperative for educators to be empowered and to be actively
involved in all stages of curriculum development.

I used to lecture the subject called Introductory to Computer
Practice N4 at a FET College level and therefore will use this
subject as reference in this essay.

1. The Design phase consists of 7 essential components, namely
Situation Analysis, Aims, Objectives, Outcomes, Content,
Teaching Methods and Evaluation. (12)

Situation Analysis
This is where as an educator, one has to be aware of the
environment that one is placed in and to ensure that the needs
of all the relevant stakeholders are taken into account when
designing or adjusting a curriculum. One would look at:
 Learners – who they are, what basic knowledge do they
have and what do they need to achieve at the end of the
learning program. At the FET, learners from matric or
working adults. Some are computer literate and others
not.
 Educators – what qualifications do they have, do they
have sufficient knowledge and skills to lecture this
subject. At the FET all lectures have to be subject
specialists and have the necessary Teaching
qualifications.
 Physical Environment – What facilities and resources are
available? The number of students in the class and the
number of students in total, are there sufficient
computers for all students? At the FET the class can
accommodate at max of 30 computers which are all loaded
with the correct software. Intake of students in guided
by the max no of students that can be accommodated in the
computer venues in a day.

,  Content – Is the content realistic, relevant to the
working world. The current syllabus as is in not,
therefore as an educator I’ve included additional
activities to ensure that our students will be competent
to use a computer once they are completed with this
subject.
 Community – What are the needs of the community? The FET
works close with the community and I ensure that the
students are prepared to work in confidence once they
have completed the course.

Aims

These are the general educational goals of the subject. For
ICP the aim is for the student to be computer literate on
completion of this subject.

Objectives

These are specific goals that need to be achieved by the
student. These students need to know the basics of Word
Processing and Spreadsheets. Example: to the able to change
the margins, print in landscape.

Outcomes

As an educator I need to ensure that I create an environment
that is conducive to teaching and learning and that all the
outcomes are achieved. I would ensure that the students are
informed of the following:
 What are the expected outcomes
 Why do they have to achieve these outcomes
 How are we going to achieve these outcomes
How they are going to be assessed to measure if they
have mastered the outcomes

Example, my students would be told that they will be learning
how to change the format of a document to meet the needs of an
example, a dissertation requirements stipulated by a lecturer.
They would therefore know how to change margins, font type and
size, line spacing, page numbering.

Content

This is an important component as it needs to meet the aims
for the subject and it needs to be relevant to the working
world. Lecturers need to adjust the content to meet the needs
of the students and that of the working world. Lecturers have
to ensure that all the necessary resources are available for
effectively delivering the learning content to the students.
