BRIEF SUMMARY
 Current situation
Jodie is 28-year-old woman, recently involved in the criminal justice system for supplying class
A drugs. She is displaying symptoms of low mood, and her problems deteriorated since she
arrived at the prison. She is an occasional drug user, but she knows it must change to get her son
back. She has been referred to CBT therapy by her probation officer to help her overcome her
offending behavior.

 Presenting problems by the “Five areas model” (Williams, 2003, cited in The Open
University, 2021a)
Incarceration have triggered her problems as she reports poor appetite, sleeping disturbances and
constant rumination. She is struggling to carry out everyday tasks, settling and making new
friends. She feels guilty for abandoning her son because of the bad decisions she made, and she
is using drugs (modifier) to cope with the distress and improve her mood, which she later regrets.
She is feeling down and sad and lead to lack of energy / enthusiasm for previously enjoyable
pursuits, causing her a vicious cycle of low mood.

 Family and relationship
Jodie`s father was alcoholic and violent towards his family. She has no contact with her father.
She did not have a good relationship with her mother either, due to the lack of time spent
together, and lost contact with her after she and her brothers were placed into social care at the
age of 10. She gave birth to her son at the age of 16. Jodie has a relationship with Darren, both of
them are arrested.



WHAT HAS CAUSED THE PROBLEM?
 Predisposing / vulnerability factors
Jodie has been through a number of traumas in her life: alcoholic dependent father, not having a
stable home, being in foster care, little attention from her mother, separation from her family,
