PVD – BASILE You are a visiting nurse working in an urban area. Today you are making an initial visit to 83- year-old Anna Basile. Mrs. Basile has peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and a left leg ulcer. In your initial conversation with Mrs. Basile, you find her to be alert and pleasant, but worried. Mrs. Basile's healthcare provider (HCP) has told her that if her leg ulcer doesn't heal she may have to be hospitalized. Mrs. Basile, a widow, lives alone in an apartment. She has three daughters; two who live out of state and visit once or twice a year, and a third, Mary, who lives locally and sees to her mother's needs. Mrs. Basile is hard of hearing and wears glasses. She says she is happy and she spends most of her time reading and talking with friends. Her gait is unsteady so she goes out infrequently, although she gets around her apartment with a cane without difficulty. Mrs. Basile's medical history is positive for atherosclerosis, angina, varicose veins, and cataracts. Surgeries include two cesarean sections and cataract removal from the right eye. Mrs. Basile says she has never smoked, she denies alcohol use, and she has no known allergies.
