Summary of my scientific report:
This is a scientific report based on my investigative project. They investigated whether caffeine
influenced memory, whether this effect was positive, negative or no effect at all. They chose to
investigate caffeine because as somebody who drinks energy drinks and coffee daily, they wanted to
investigate the memory side as they have a good memory and wanted to see if caffeine had any
psychological or physiological effects. As a college student, I see a lot of student drinking energy drinks,
so I thought this was an excellent investigative project to choose. The method I used was taking 10
participants and splititng these into 2 groups of 5 participants per group. 5 participants would be given
an energy drink, and 5 would be given Vimto to act as a placebo drink. She chose to do a placebo effect
so that the participants would not be sure which drink they had, so they do not try to improve or do
worse to change results. The findings of this project were that the control group who drank caffeine
received higher scores both individually and as an average (mean). The conclusion she had come to is
that caffeine does improve short term memory and enhances a person’s memory when they ingest
caffeine. The findings that were recorded as data sets have been analyzed thoroughly to conclude that
there is a significant link between caffeine in energy drinks and an enhanced performance on memory.

Introduction:
The investigation into how caffeine effects memory is based on the problem that caffeine and energy
drinks is seen more negatively than it is positively. With so many people around the ages of 16-24
drinking energy drinks daily or weekly, she wanted to investigate what caffeine can do to the body
positively and how this can be a benefit to the body either long term or short term. My hypothesis goes
against the problem of caffeine, stating that caffeine does improve memory. She decided to use this
hypothesis as I have done extensive scientific research which supports the cognitive and physiological

, positive effects caffeine has. She decided to then use energy drinks as a source of caffeine because it is a
quite common drink in the college setting and popular among people my age. The method she used was
using a memory test to measure a person’s memorable ability. This was because memory tests are easy
to carry out, with most people being familiar to a visual memory test. The results that she had collected
showed that the control group, who had ingested caffeine, did have a higher score so this helped her to
conclude that caffeine can have an improvement on memory. My research objective was to explore all
different effects of caffeine, specifically looking at the psychological effects of caffeine and how this can
affect memory and neurology. The work she had carried out was looking into the positive effects of
caffeine and conducting an experiment to measure my hypothesis, as well as being able to look over my
raw data and compare this with published scientific data. By comparing the data with published
scientific data, she was able to see how well I carried out the experiment and draw conclusions from my
raw data.

Variables and hypotheses:
Hypothesis:

There is a significant link between caffeine in energy drinks and an enhanced performance on memory.

Null hypothesis:

There is no significant link between caffeine in energy drinks and no enhanced performance on memory.

Independent variable:

The independent variable for my experiment was the different drinks that people were drinking- for
example: Energy drinks (caffeine) and Vimto (non-caffeine). 5 students drank Vimto, and 5 students
drank energy drinks, with 2 repeats for both groups.

Dependent variable:

The dependent variable for my experiment was the scores that people achieved on the memory test.
The psychology of the experiment from the effects of caffeine or no caffeine was measured by the
results that she gathered from the control group and the uncontrolled group.

Constants:

The constant was the 2 different drinks each 2 groups will be drinking, along with the amount of the
drink they had consumed. Each participant had to have the same amount of the drink and finish the
drink, and this made sure that everyone had an equal amount of caffeine or no caffeine to receive
accurate results.

Control variable:

The control variable was the participants not eating or drinking (ingesting) caffeine before the test, this
could have affected the scores if participants had already had caffeine in their system before
participating in the experiment. Another control variable was the test given to participants. All
participants had to play the same memory game and start on the same level to make the results as fair
and accurate as possible.
