Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Procedures: Plan of Care for a Client Who Has Gastroenteritis
● A positive finding for clostridium difficile is indicative of this opportunistic infection,
which usually becomes established secondary to use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
● Medications: Some medications ( NSAIDs, warfarin, aspirin) place the client at risk for
complications. Notify the provider if medication restrictions were not followed.
● Blood Test: Interpretations of Findings
o A
spartate aminotransferase/ Alanine Aminotransferase: Elevation occurs
with hepatitis or cirrhosis.
o A
lkaline Phosphatase- Elevation indicates liver damage
o A
mylase/ Lipase- Elevation occurs with pancreatitis
o T
otal Bilirubin- Elevation indicate altered liver function, bile duct obstruction,
or other hepatobiliary disorder.
o A
lbumin- Decrease can indicate hepatic disease.
o A
lpha-fetoprotein- Elevated in liver cancer, cirrhosis and hepatitis.

mmonia- Elevated in liver disease.

● Clients should maintain a BMI of less than 30.
● Clients should limit caffeine and alcohol intake
● Clients should use stress-management techniques during times of stress.

● Clients should engage in exercise that provides aerobic benefits at least 3 times a week.

● PRIORITY: WASTE PRODUCTS ARE RADIOACTIVE AND YOU NEED TO
PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS FROM RADIATION, warning sign on door
● wearing lead apron and using lead containers, limiting visitors to 30 min visits, not
allowed in room: pregnant, anyone under 18
● use of foley or flushing toilet twice, bed rest, stress need to stay in instructed position to
prevent dislodgement

Recommendations for a Client Who Has Nephrotic Syndrome
● Restrict dietary sodium, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.
● Provide a diet that is high in carbohydrates and moderate in fat.
● Restrict intake of fluids (based on urinary output).
● Instruct the client to monitor the daily intake of carbohydrates, proteins, sodium, and
potassium according to the providers prescription.
● Instruct the client to avoid antacids containing magnesium
