TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION BY FACULTY IN DISTANCE LEARNING
Technology Adoption by Faculty in Distance Learning
Introduction:
Distance education learning entails the use of technology to deliver knowledge from
the faculty to students without a face to face meeting (Moore, 2013). The success of distance
learning in nursing is achievable from a reliable technological infrastructure and a qualified
faculty which delivers instructions effectively. The technology is essential in the development
of project courses that support clinical judgment skills (Bradshaw & Lowenstein, 2011).
However, the adoption of technology by the faculty for effective delivery of instructions is
facing barriers which render distance education inefficient.
Reliability
One of the major challenges in using technology by the faculty to teach is
unreliability. The software used in distance learning is incompatible with office and home
which makes the utilization of the software rather complex. The required internet services to
run the software is not usually readily available due to network related problems. The internet
may be slow to access due to the network errors. The software may also malfunction which
leads to the cut off of services. Once it breaks down, the faculty is unable to render their
services. This mainly occurs when the software is outdated. There is the likelihood of
occurrence of mistakes by the support services which leads to errors in the transmission of
knowledge to students. Other problems which lead to the unreliability of technology is the
burning out of bulbs due to the loss of electricity which makes it hard for the faculty to access
some facilities required in delivering knowledge to students (Visser, 2012).
The reliability of technology in distance learning can be enhanced by the management
convincing the staff who are involved with technology on the importance of reliability of
technological equipment, how it is used in the classroom and the maintenance involved. They
