Nursing Education Seminar 2
Topic 4:
Discussion Question 1:
Review four new technology applications posted that you have not had experience with in
the nursing environment. For each technology application, explain how it may be modified
or adapted for your specific field or patient population. Feel free to ask questions about the
application as well. As classmates post to your assignments or ask questions, respond to
each.
The health care sector has evolved in the 21st century in an attempt to curb the constantly
arising disorders and diseases. Industrialization in the international sector has brought so much
economic benefit with it, but it is not without side effects. There has been a rise in diseases and
new genetic disorders that have come along with the technological advancement in the last
decade. The integration of the information technology into the healthcare systems has been
paramount to the mounting pressure of patients admitted on a daily basis. However, much of the

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN THE NURSING SECTOR
technological innovations has not been received single-heartedly as most view it as a
replacement of their careers or even giving them an entirely different orientation. The nursing
section is critical in organizations providing health services as it ensures safety. Quality and
efficient services. Optimal recovery and suffering alleviation is the mandate of the nurses. The
emerging technologies to be discussed will, therefore, help a great deal.
Genetics and genomics
Genetics is a significant section of the human system as it determines how an individual
reacts to foreign matter in the body. Its predictive nature of gene mutation notifies in advance the
possibilities of a person developing genetic disorders like sickle-cell anemia or cancer. This
ability also identifies a mutation that could be inherited and is done through prenatal screening of
the utero and newborn screening (Discovery Communications LLC, 2012). It also checks the
cancer cells and determines the effectiveness of given treatments. It is viewed to be a preventive
technology unlike the health system of the past which only fixes illness after they have been
contracted. It is common for patients to come in with their genotyped reports for only a few
dollars and it is possible online. It empowers the patient and improves treatment efficiency
(Coghlan, 2012, October 18). However, the concern is towards confidentiality of the
information. It is also being developed to do away with transplants as organs can be formed from
human tissues also teeth cloning. Genotyping and genetic sequencing will help in the diagnosis
of children and avoid disorders at an early stage. The technology should focus on the handling of
cancer cases due to the genetic mutation in kids.
Less invasive and more accurate tools for diagnosis and treatment
