P1. Explain the characteristics of the five main types of pathogens and a disease caused by
each

Bacteria

Represent a single cell microorganism consisting of prokaryotic cells that are single cells and doesn’t
have any organelles for example mitochondria, chloroplast or a nucleus. In the deoxyribonucleic acid, a
double stand that is uninterrupted and circular is positioned in the nucleoid. A nucleoid is representing
an irregular shape within the prokaryotic cell and contains genetic material. Moreover, bacteria can
have a cell membrane and cell wall and it’s made of peptidoglycan. Some bacteria can consist of an
extra circle of genetic material which has the name of plasmid and contains genes. The reproduction of
bacteria is asexual because the two daughters’ cell have binary fission with the identical
deoxyribonucleic as the parent cell. They have different sizes and shape. Bacteria is a small
microorganism that can be only seen with a microscope, and you can distinguish three main shapes

, and can be classified by their shape for example Bacilli (rod-shaped), Cocci (sphere-shaped) and Spirilli
(spiral-shaped). Bacteria can form an endospore which are structures extremely resistant to chemical
conditions for example UV radiation, heat and disinfectants.

Parasites

They are living organisms that sustain themselves through nutrients or other resources. Parasites live
on or within and they are known as a host. A parasite may live on the surface of a host or within the
body’s host. There are many varieties of parasites for example insects or worms, and they can be
pathogenic and cause infectious disease. Moreover, they are specialised organisms that can derive food
from the host. Parasites are smaller than their host and they use both vertebrates and invertebrates.
Parasites can live on the host for example live or in the host such as tapeworms.

Viruses

Represents tiny, microscopic particles that are found everywhere and can be presented in plants,
animals and other living organisms. Moreover, a virus is an infectious particle that is reproduced by a
host cell. A virus is composed of ribonucleic acid or deoxyribonucleic acid genome that is found inside
of a protein shell known as a capsid. Viruses have a variety of types, and they came in different
structures and shapes with different genomes, life cycles and hosts. Moreover, some viruses can have
an outer layer that is called an envelope which is formed by the membrane phospholipid. There are
three types of viruses’ example animal viruses, bacteriophages and plant viruses.
