Week 19 ERQ Outline IB Psychology Outline Template ! IB Psychology Outline Template ERQ Evaluate social identity theory making reference to specific studies. Command Term The command term is the most important element of any question. Ask yourself what the question requires from you. What is the best way to meet the demands of the command term? This command term means that my essay should assess the implications and limitations of the studies, formulate my own judgements and opinions based on the information given to me, and discuss the methods that relate to the criteria of the assignment. The best way that I could meet the demands of the command term is by discussing the strengths and limitations of the case studies, including my point of view of the issues of social identity, and by discussing the methods used throughout the experiments. Introduction Thinking about your introduction and writing it in full in your outline is a valuable investment of your time. Telling the examiner what the essay will do and what it will argue is an effective way to show your essay writing skills. An excellent introduction should also provide the context for your response and identify the study or studies you will use to support your argument. The social identity theory was first developed by Henri Tajfel in 1971. Through this theory Tajfel claimed that the groups that we “belong to” and associate ourselves with, are very substantial due to the pride and self-esteem that they provoke within an individual. Furthermore, the theory also explains how we have the opportunity to feel good about ourselves by “boosting the status” of the certain groups we are apart of. In this theory groups are considered to be ethnic groups, religious groups, sport teams, age groups, and even nations. Through these groups we can gain a sense of self identity/value and belonging. While the terms “ingroup” and “outgroup” are explained in the theory to be contradicting, it is still a part of what develops one’s perception of themself. This theory helps to further demonstrate the methods behind prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination. Tajfel has categorized this theory into three “processes”; categorization, social identification and social comparison. In order to further develop the ideas and motives of the social identity theory, the Tajfel (1971) and the Howarth (2002) study will be observed. This essay will not only consider the strengths and limitations of each study, but will also encompass how the social identity theory has an impact of humanity in general.
