Sickle Cell Disease
By Ashleigh Clarke
, What is sickle cell?
Sickle cell disease is a health condition that affects the blood
cells. It is caused by a mutation in the beta globin HBB gene that
causes unusual shaped red blood cells. The most common type of
this condition is sickle cell anaemia.
The unusual shaped cells do not live long like the healthy red
blood cells and this causes a blood shortage in the body.
The misshaped cells clog up the blood vessels and block the
blood flow causing problems such as strokes and infections.
