Periodic table of elements
• Materials are made up of elements.
• All elements are indicated on the periodic table.
• The horizontal rows are called periods and the vertical columns are called groups.
• Elements are grouped according to their similar chemical properties and physical
characteristics.
• An element will be classified as either a:
• Metal
• Semi-metal or metalloid
• Non-metal
• Groups have names!
• Group 1 – alkali metals
• Group 2 – alkaline earth metals
• Group 17 – halogens
• Group 18 – noble gases
Representation of elements
• Elements consist of one type of atom only.
• Each atoms has a specific number of:
• Neutrons
• Protons (+ charges)
• Electrons (- charges)
• Every element has its own unique properties and is represented on the periodic table
individually.
