 MFP – Meaning, Form, Pronunciation

1. What is the target form of the first conditional If + S + present simple, S + future simple (will + infinitive)
(both clauses)? (F)
You can swap the clauses, the condition first and then the ‘if’ clause.
2. What is the model sentence you will elicit to I’ll start by telling them class that I will be teaching them what a first conditional is. I will go
begin your presentation? on to say that it is a form of a sentence that expresses future conditions or consequences
that will happen.
Then I’ll write down on the board this sentence: ‘If it rains, you will get wet’.

3. What are the negative and question Model sentence in negative form: if it does not rain, you won’t get wet.
(interrogative) forms of your model sentence? Form: if + subject + present simple + not, subject + won’t + infinitive

but you only need to show one negative and one Model sentence in question form: What will you do if it rains?
question, then analyse the forms.) Form: Interrogative + will + infinitive + if + present simple

4. What is the function? (M) The function of the first conditional is to express a real or probable situation in the present
or future tense.
There is always a condition because of the word ‘if’ in the sentence:
- If it stops snowing, I will go skiing.
- If you don’t hurry, you will miss the bus.
Meaning negotiation/promise.
5. What do students need to know about the Intonation: The tone rises at the first clause, and then falls in the second clause.
pronunciation, including sentence stress and ‘If it rains’ (rise) ‘you will get wet’ (fall).
