Battle of Hastings
In the 11th century Edward the Confessor (from England) died childless. William claimed the English
crown. Harold seemed to support his claim by oath, but he broke off and made perjury. (eedbreuk)
Two armies clashed in the battle of Hastings in 1066, October the 14th. Harrold was killed and William
was crowned king of England in Westminster Abbey on Christmasday.
England under William I
William I was busy by putting down revolts (opstandjes) for five years. He made a system of land
tenure that was the basis of feudalism (feodalisme/leenstelsel). Whole Europe used that way of
ruling and his thoughts about feudalism were written down in de Domesday Book. > Day of Doom,
